Banana Republic Safari Photojournalist Vest L ZEBCO MotorGuide Deadstock 80’s

PRODUCT DETAILS

A remarkable piece from Banana Republic's original Travel & Safari Clothing Co. era, this vintage 1980s Photojournalist's Vest captures the adventurous spirit that defined the brand before its transformation into a modern fashion retailer.

During the 1980s, Banana Republic was known for its safari-inspired clothing, illustrated catalogs, and rugged expedition gear. This vest was designed specifically for working photojournalists, featuring an impressive 22-pocket configurationintended to carry cameras, film, lenses, light meters, and other essential equipment.

What makes this example particularly interesting is the embroidered ZEBCO MotorGuide logo, connecting two recognizable names in American outdoor history.

ZEBCO (Zero Hour Bomb Company) traces its roots to 1949, when the company entered the fishing industry with its revolutionary closed-face spincast reels. Originally associated with watchmaking and oil-field equipment, ZEBCO became one of America's most recognizable fishing tackle brands, helping make recreational fishing more accessible to generations of anglers.

MotorGuide, another established name in the fishing industry, became known for its electric trolling motors, particularly among bass anglers and competitive fishermen. The ZEBCO MotorGuide branding reflects an era when the companies were associated within the fishing equipment industry.

The combination of Banana Republic's original safari styling and ZEBCO MotorGuide embroidery gives this vest an unusual crossover appeal among vintage clothing collectors, fishing enthusiasts, and outdoor memorabilia collectors.

Constructed from 100% cotton in a classic beige/khaki colorway, the vest features breathable mesh ventilation, reinforced shoulders, numerous cargo compartments, zippered security pockets, and adjustable side straps.

Best of all, this example retains its original Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Co. hangtag, complete with the original product description and mail-in catalog request card.

Treasure Hunter's Note:

Before Banana Republic became a mall staple, it was an eccentric safari outfitter founded by Mel and Patricia Ziegler in 1978. Its early clothing was inspired by military surplus, international travel, and classic expedition equipment.

This Photojournalist's Vest is a particularly interesting survivor from that period. The original hangtag describes how the company expanded its earlier 15-pocket design into a 22-pocket vest after consulting working photojournalists. Specialized compartments were developed for everything from film canisters and lenses to identification, writing instruments, and security essentials.

The ZEBCO MotorGuide embroidery adds another layer of history, suggesting this example was produced or customized for a fishing-industry promotional or corporate purpose. While its exact original use is unconfirmed, the branding makes it considerably more distinctive than a standard retail version.

Finding an early Banana Republic safari vest with its original hangtag, specialized 22-pocket construction, and vintage fishing-industry embroidery is an especially interesting combination.

A fantastic piece of 1980s outdoor heritage that brings together Banana Republic's original safari identity and the legacy of American recreational fishing.

To our knowledge, this is the only deadstock example of this particular ZEBCO MotorGuide vest currently available online.
